Exploratory data analysis of multidimensional poverty

How poverty varies across 339 municipalities and 9 departments, and how it relates to population and night-time lights.

This Colab notebook explores the Multidimensional Poverty Index of 2012 across Bolivia’s municipalities: summary statistics, the poorest and least poor municipalities, distributions and box plots by department, a treemap of population and poverty, and the links with population and night-time lights. Poverty averages 0.18 and runs from 0.007 to 0.52; Pando and Chuquisaca are the poorest departments and Tarija and Santa Cruz the least poor, but poverty varies more within departments than between them. Brighter municipalities are less poor (correlation −0.54), and the slope is negative in all nine departments.
