Spatial inequality of poverty and night-time lights
Gini, Theil between and within departments, and the spatial Gini: how much of Bolivia’s inequality is regional?
This Colab notebook measures inequality across the 339 municipalities in multidimensional poverty and in night-time lights per capita (2012). Poverty has a Gini of 0.31; the Theil index shows that only about a quarter of it lies between the nine departments, and the rest within them. The spatial Gini confirms that neighbouring municipalities are more alike than distant ones. A department table compares simple and population-weighted poverty.
